Khulan Day was launched in 2012 in the Gobi Desert of Mongolia by Association GOVIIN KHULAN, with the support of a local community in the southeastern Gobi.
The initiative was inspired by the urgent need to protect the Mongolian khulan (Asiatic wild ass) and its unique Gobi steppe habitat. It grew out of years of fieldwork, meaningful conversations with local herders, and the traditional ecological knowledge they generously shared about living alongside this remarkable species.
Rooted in grassroots and community-led conservation, Khulan Day recognizes that lasting conservation impact begins with those who share their landscapes with wildlife. By empowering local voices and promoting coexistence, the day serves as a reminder that protecting the khulan means protecting the biodiversity and cultural heritage of the Gobi Desert.
